Stephen F. Lewis

Stephen F. Lewis, MA, LMHC, NCC, E-RYT, is a licensed clinical psychotherapist in private practice, with offices in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York City. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor of New York State, an NBCC Nationally Certified Counselor, and a certified yoga instructor and Yoga Therapist. After serving as a Clinical Director overseeing substance use programs and HIV housing facilities at the Harlem United Community AIDS Center, Stephen is now focusing on his private practice work and earning his PhD in Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University, specializing in Integrative Mental Health.

Education and Training:

Stephen earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Brown University and studied the philosophy of mind and Eastern psychology at Oxford University. Stephen holds a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from New York University. He completed his clinical training in the inpatient and outpatient psychiatric units of Bellevue Medical Center in New York, where he was trained in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, psychodynamics, and mindfulness stress reduction.

After becoming a certified Kripalu yoga instructor, a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist, and studying the Indian healing tradition called Ayurveda, Stephen gained extensive experience applying mind-body approaches in treating mental health concerns in community, hospital, and private practice settings. In July 2011, Stephen co-wrote a research study on yoga as an adjunctive treatment for people with schizophrenia, published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.

Stephen offers therapy that is grounded in scientific research, while incorporating practices of mindfulness, yoga, and other mind-body techniques. By integrating the time-tested sciences of holistic health with modern psychotherapy, Stephen supports his clients in reaching optimal wellness, maintaining balance, and finding contentment in life.
